Chip enabled MEMBER CARD® debit cards

Chip technology is designed to make an already safe payment system even more secure. The new MEMBER CARD® debit cards contain an embedded microchip that has the ability to process and store data securely reducing the risk of debit card skimming or production of counterfeit cards.

MEMBER CARD® debit cards with chip technology provide customers with the same access to online banking from computers, mobile phones and over 560 ATM's on THE EXCHANGE® ATM Network in BC, and over 2,350 ATM's across Canada.

Important Notice about your MEMBER CARD® debit card

Effective January 1, 2013 all Westminster Savings MEMBER CARDS® will need chip technology to work at all automated banking machines (ABM’s) and point of sale (POS) terminals.

What does this mean for you? Check your MEMBER CARD® debit card for the chip.

  • If you have not received a new MEMBER CARD® debit card with a chip embedded please contact our Member Service Centre at 604 517 0100 or visit wscu.com to find a branch near you and request one.
  • If you have received a new chip MEMBER CARD® debit card, but have not yet used it, please activate it as soon as possible by using it at any ABM or POS terminal. All of your information, including your PIN, remains the same and your old card will automatically be deactivated.
  • Destroy your old card.

Interac Association is transitioning to a new generation of payment card technology, known as chip technology, which will make a safe payment system even more secure. To support this transition, Interac has been working with banks, credit unions and merchants to upgrade all bank cards, Automated Banking Machines (ABM) and point-of-sale (POS) terminals across Canada to support the new chip technology. Chip cards will continue to have a magnetic stripe on the back for cardholders to use their debit cards in other countries that do not use chip technology, however please note that Westminster Savings MEMBER CARD® debit cards that do not have a chip embedded will not work within Canada starting January 1, 2013.

In 2011, Westminster Savings sent new chip MEMBER CARD® debit cards to members. The new MEMBER CARD® debit card contains an embedded microchip which allows it to store and process data more securely and is virtually impossible to copy or change. With the new chip card, members will continue to have the same access to online banking from their computer or mobile phone, as well as access to over 560 ATM's in BC and 2,350 ATM's across Canada – with no added surcharges.

The new chip card provides enhanced security, greater convenience and greater pin control for members.

Act Now! How to use your new chip MEMBER CARD® debit card

To make a purchase

  • Insert your card into a chip reading point-of-sale (POS) card terminal. Wait for the prompt and enter your PIN to complete the transaction. Your new card has been set up to work with your existing PIN.
  • Start using your new chip debit card immediately, anywhere you use your current debit card. MEMBER CARD® and PIN numbers remain the same for the new card.
  • The new chip card will have a magnetic stripe on the back of the card to ensure continued acceptance at locations around the world that have not yet converted to chip technology.
  • Old debit cards with magnetic stripes will remain fully functional until the new chip card is used for the first time.

To change your PIN

  • Change your PIN anytime from any ATM on THE EXCHANGE® Network.
  • If you think your PIN has been compromised, change your PIN immediately and contact your local branch.

Act Now! How to protect your PIN

  • Keep your ATM card in a safe place at all times.
  • At a point-of-sale machine insert or swipe your card yourself. If the merchant must swipe your card for you watch your card until it is handed back to you.
  • Be vigilant: even point-of-sale machines or ATM's at reputable merchants can be the target of ATM card skimming frauds.
  • Never share your PIN with anyone else.
  • When you enter your PIN at a point-of-sale machine or ATM, shield the keypad with your hand or body to prevent others from watching you enter your information.
  • Choose a secure PIN: don't use birthdays, personal information or single and sequential numbers.
  • Don't use ATM machines that appear to have their card slots tampered with or are in a state of disrepair.
