Westminster Savings board member Emmet McGrath recognized for outstanding service to credit union system

Surrey, B.C. – Thursday, May 2, 2019 — Westminster Savings Credit Union is proud to announce that board member Emmet McGrath has been recognized with the Credit Union Foundation of BC’s Distinguished Service Award.

McGrath has served with distinction on the board of directors of Westminster Savings Credit Union from 1987 to 1996 and from 2004 to the present. He has held several leadership roles including chair of the board and chair of the Audit and Risk Committee. He has also served as a director and chair of the Westminster Savings Charitable Foundation, one of Canada’s largest credit union foundations.

He is a Chartered Professional Accountant with more than thirty years of experience in public accounting and private industry. A partner with KPMG LLP until retiring in 2002, he has served on various mining companies’ boards and is currently on UEX Corporation’s board. He is also a past director of Central 1 Credit Union and The Co-operators Group Ltd.

Having contributed to Westminster Savings’ success for more than 25 years, McGrath brings deep insight and perspective to the governance role, says current board chair Art Van Pelt. “Other board members view Emmet as a role model for how to be a board member in a member-based organization where enhancing member value is the primary objective,” says Van Pelt. “We are thrilled to see such a deserving individual recognized for his distinguished contribution to the credit union system.”

The Credit Union Foundation’s awards were presented at a ceremony in Vancouver on April 25. The Distinguished Service award is bestowed to an individual in recognition of outstanding service in the BC Credit Union system and in many cases beyond. The award is not limited to credit union directors and employees but extends to all persons who have made exceptional contributions to the BC credit union system and the co-operative movement.
