Prospera and Westminster Savings leadership teams partner with OceanWise for White Rock Shoreline cleanup

As they prepare for the membership vote that will decide if these two credit unions will merge, Prospera Credit Union and Westminster Savings will take a few hours out from preparation and planning to contribute to the community and help clean up one of the Lower Mainland’s best-loved beaches.

Surrey, BC – On Monday, October 21, leaders from both Prospera and Westminster Savings will come together at the White Rock Pier as part of the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup. This cleanup is dedicated to ocean conservation and ocean ecology awareness, helping people understand the impact of what we put into our oceans and waterways. It will be led by OceanWise staff and both organizations’ leadership teams will contribute to a cleaner beach while learning a thing or two about ocean ecology along the way.

Last month, Prospera and Westminster Savings received regulatory consent to ask their members to vote on a proposed merger of the two credit unions. The campaign for members is called FutureStrong, and merger information can be found at futurestrong.ca.

“The partnership with OceanWise and bringing together leaders from both organizations will demonstrate one of the many ways our strength as one credit union will be so positive,” says TJ Schmaltz, Senior Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer, Westminster Savings Credit Union. “Both credit unions are passionate about giving back to the community; as one merged credit union, we expect that our ability to do that will be amplified.”

“The FutureStrong campaign emphasizes how we will be able to better serve our members, enhance opportunities for our employees and contribute in an even greater way to the communities we serve,” says Angela Champ, Senior Vice President, People & Culture, Prospera Credit Union. “Being able to come together as leaders without office formalities is a great opportunity, especially when the result is something we care about – a cleaner ocean and a healthier community.”

Attendees will spend a couple of hours in teams picking up trash and debris from the shoreline before it’s back to spreading the word to credit union members about the proposed merger and of course serving the day to day needs of the nearly 120,000 members within the two organizations.

Merger information packages were sent to all eligible members of Prospera Credit Union and Westminster Savings last month. Voting runs from October 30, 2019 until November 15, 2019. If approved, the credit unions expect to begin joint operations in January 2020 and will continue to make events like this part of their integrated mandate.

In keeping with its continued commitment to the communities where it does business, Westminster Savings is also donating to the OceanWise Conservation Association to help further their work in conserving and preserving our ocean ecology.
