Pride in their jobs, trust in leaders: staff give Westminster Savings official Great Place to Work certification

Surrey, B.C. – Who says Westminster Savings is a Great Place to Work? Staff at Westminster Savings, that’s who.

As one of BC’s largest credit unions, Westminster Savings surveys its staff twice a year to hear their voice and understand what is working well and get their frank feedback. Westminster Savings has had high engagement for several years, but this June’s results certified the organization as a Great Place to Work. The survey run by Great Place to Work Canada is completely confidential and lets staff rate their workplace on factors that includes respect, fairness, pride, camaraderie and culture.

But the key to a great workplace is the level of transparency that employees feel in their organization which leads to greater trust, says TJ Schmaltz, Chief Human Resources Officer.

“We are both proud and humbled that our amazing staff rated Westminster Savings so highly, and they told us that as an employer, we are doing a lot of things right,” says Schmaltz. “We’re creating a workplace where staff feel trust in their leaders and in the organization, look forward to coming to work every day, are encouraged to bring ideas forward, have pride in their jobs and enjoy working with their colleagues. We are not satisfied with great results; we want to strive to be even better.”

Great Place to Work (GPTW) looks at five pillars in its determination of a highly engaged organization: respect, credibility, fairness, pride and camaraderie. Westminster Savings employees rated the organization highly in all those areas. The next step for Westminster Savings is a culture audit that determines eligibility for the National Best Workplaces in Canada list published by GPTW each year. That audit focuses on key areas like inspiring, celebrating, caring and thinking, among others.
