Westminster Savings donates $5,000 to Surrey Christmas Bureau

Donation will assist local families and help mark Giving Tuesday, the opening day of the giving season

Surrey, B.C. – Last year, the Surrey Christmas Bureau saw a record number of families registering for help and this year the demand is expected to be higher.

Westminster Savings is hoping to make the holidays a bit cheerier for those families in need. Helping enrich the lives of their members and the communities they serve is a guiding principle for all credit unions, says president and CEO Gavin Toy.

“The credit union system is all about helping our members and the communities that we live and work in,” says Toy. “Last year, the Surrey Christmas Bureau served over 2,000 low-income families and they are expecting record numbers this year. Not only does the bureau ensure that children will find a present under the tree, they’re addressing a keen need for necessities like groceries, clothing and household items, and we hope our donation can help some of those families.”

The Surrey Christmas Bureau is the largest in British Columbia, last year serving 2,007 families including 4,449 children, with that number expected to rise around 10 per cent this year. The bureau is accepting donations Monday-Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

December 3, 2019 marks the seventh annual Giving Tuesday which takes place each year immediately following Black Friday and Cyber Monday. This global movement for giving and volunteering occurs in over 150 countries and over 6,500 business and charities participate annually.
