Westminster Savings Donating $10,000 to Red Cross to Aid in Wildfire Relief

Surrey, B.C., August 29, 2018 – A donation of $10,000 to the Canadian Red Cross has been made by Westminster Savings Credit Union (Westminster Savings) to help assist those impacted by the devastating B.C. wildfires.
This year’s wildfires have triggered evacuations in several communities and resulted in more than 1,500 properties under evacuation orders and upwards of 10,000 currently on alert.

With over 600 wildfires still burning, the 2018 season has been one of the worst in recent memory. On August 15, the B.C. government declared a provincial state of emergency after the fires consumed more than 4,300 square kilometres.
“Our thoughts are with our friends and neighbours who have been impacted by this devastating situation, and our deepest thanks go out to the firefighters, first responders and volunteers for their commitment to supporting the affected families and communities,” says Gavin Toy, President and CEO, Westminster Savings. “Our role as a credit union is to enrich the lives of our customers and communities and we see no better way to do so than to support those in need.”

In addition to Westminster Savings’ donation, the government of British Columbia will also be matching individual donations up to $20 million made to the Red Cross until October 12, 2018.
Donations can be made online at http:///www.redcross.ca or by telephone at 1-800-418-111. Donations will help provide immediate relief such as cots, blankets, family reunification and financial assistance for food, clothing and personal needs, and may also help re-entry and go towards more long-term recovery, resiliency and preparedness.
