Westminster Savings Credit Union appoints new Senior Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer

Surrey, B.C. – June 12, 2017 – Westminster Savings is pleased to announce the appointment of Terrence J. (TJ) Schmaltz as Senior Vice President, Human Resources and Corporate Communications.

“TJ is a business-oriented and results-driven leader with wide experience in aligning HR practices with organizational strategy,” said President and CEO Gavin Toy. “As Chief Human Resources Officer, TJ will have executive oversight for organizational culture and employee engagement, recruitment and workforce planning, training and leadership development, compensation and benefits, labour relations and corporate and internal communications.”

Mr. Schmaltz joins Westminster Savings from Impark where he was responsible for overseeing all human resource functions in Canada and the US as Vice President, Human Resources and Chief Human Resources Officer. He was actively involved in Impark’s US growth strategy and has significant experience in several large successful merger and acquisition transactions over the past few years. Prior to joining Impark in 2014, Mr. Schmaltz spent five years working as Executive Director, Human Resources and Payroll Services at the District of West Vancouver. From 2006 until 2009, he held the position of Director, Employee Relations at BC Liquor Stores, and also owned and operated Pacific Employee Relations, a successful management consulting firm, on a part-time basis from 2006 until 2014.  

Mr. Schmaltz, a Chartered Professional in Human Resources (CPHR), started his career as a lawyer with a focus on labour and employment law, and holds both a Bachelor of Common Law (LLB) and a Bachelor of Civil Law (BCL) from McGill University. He also holds a Bachelor of Social Science – Political Science and History from the University of Ottawa. He is a part-time instructor at BCIT’s Faculty of Business Administration where he teaches courses in law and HR and management. In addition, he currently serves as chair of the board of the Chartered Professionals in Human Resources of BC and the Yukon, and as a member of the Vancouver Aquarium board of directors. Mr. Schmaltz joined Westminster Savings on June 9, 2017.
