Westminster Savings Foundation donates $20,000 to South Vancouver Family Place

Funding will support much-needed family drop-in program in the Fraserlands/River District area

Vancouver, B.C., January 18, 2016 - Previously under-served families with young children in South Vancouver's Fraserlands area will be able to access support in 2016 through a drop-in program, thanks to a $20,000 grant from the Westminster Savings Foundation.

The funding will help support the Fraserland Family Drop-in, run by South Vancouver Family Place (SVFP). This program is open to all families in the area with young children ages 0 to 5 years. While children have the opportunity to play and learn through a wide variety of activities, parents (and the many grandparents who attend) have opportunities to meet other local families, find out about community resources and receive support and guidance around parenting and childhood development.

In recent years, SVFP identified a vital need for such programming in the Fraserlands area, as families living there (many are immigrant and/or low income) experience a distinct lack of community, social and health services, a fragmented public transit system and a challenging topography that makes accessing other resources challenging (steep hills).

"We are proud to support South Vancouver Family Place and the Fraserlands Family Drop-in program," says Gavin Toy, President and CEO, Westminster Savings Credit Union. "The drop-in program provides vital programming for a group of isolated families with young children who have minimal opportunities to become involved in community and connect with others. The Family Drop-in will also be a welcoming place for the many new young families moving into the River District development in the years ahead, helping to create a healthy inclusive and balanced community."

"The staff, board and families are so excited about this new partnership with Westminster Savings," says Sharon Babu, Executive Director, South Vancouver Family Place. "We have struggled to maintain a presence in the Fraserlands/River District communities and with this new funding we feel we can focus more on community development and less on trying to find the financial resources to support our work. Our ability to reach out to the more isolated families and to develop innovative programs to meet emerging needs of local families is now possible."
