Support from Westminster Savings Credit Union Keeps Minds in Motion

People experiencing the early stages of memory loss due to dementia have been able to enjoy a fitness and social/activity program thanks in part to a $20,000 grant from the Westminster Savings Foundation.

This grant funding is supporting the Alzheimer Society of B.C.’s Minds in Motion® program, which provides people with dementia and their care partners an opportunity for fitness and leisure activities that would otherwise not be available. Funding will allow the expansion of the program in Burnaby, White Rock, Surrey and Langley. Offered in partnership with a Community or Seniors Centre, a certified fitness instructor conducts the fitness portion of the program, and an Alzheimer Society staff member and volunteers ensure participants are welcomed and involved in activities, social time and light refreshments in a relaxed atmosphere. As Minds in Motion® is specifically designed to suit the needs of people with dementia, it offers a safe and relaxed environment that provides an emotional respite from the challenges of living with the disease for the person with the diagnosis and their care partner.

“We are proud to support the Alzheimer Society of B.C. and the Minds in Motion® program," says Gavin Toy, President and CEO, Westminster Savings Credit Union. “This program helps people with dementia engage with others, maintain brain health and overall well-being, as well as giving them access to vital information, education and support, in turn creating an inclusive and balanced community."
