Westminster Savings supports active living program for local seniors

New Westminster, B.C., June 8, 2015 – A group of New Westminster seniors is celebrating the start of summer this week with the kick-off of their Nordic walking season, thanks to a grant from the Westminster Savings Foundation. The group is part of a larger Seniors Services Society Out and About program, which Westminster Savings is supporting through a two-year, $20,000 grant to encourage active living.

The Seniors Services Society's Out and About program supports seniors who may be isolated or face barriers to participation by providing a door-to-door bus pick up service and low-cost recreational and cultural outings for seniors in the community.

"The Out and About programs are important on so many levels," says Brian Dodd, Interim Executive Director, Seniors Services Society. "Not only do the seniors participating in these great programs feel less isolated, but they are building meaningful connections in our community and they are staying fit through the active living components."

The Nordic walking group uses specially designed poles for stability and a whole body walking workout. The group visits New Westminster parks for regular one-hour walks, rain or shine. The Out and About recreational outings also include Osteofit, Aquafit and swimming.

"Active living is important to every member of our community, at every age," says Westminster Savings President and CEO, Gavin Toy. "We're proud to support the Seniors Services Society's Out and About program because it's helping seniors stay active and build social connections to improve quality of life and reduce isolation."

Westminster Savings is supporting the Seniors Services Society as part of Project Better Balance, a community investment program to help individuals and families achieve better balance in their lives by providing greater access for participation in the arts and active living.
