Westminster Savings Funds Innovative Circus Skills Youth Program

New Westminster, B.C., February 25, 2015 – Budding young circus performers in the Tri-Cities will continue to have an opportunity to learn new "Big Top" skills, thanks in part to a $5,400 grant to ACCESS Outreach Society's ACRiX program from the Westminster Savings Foundation.

ACRiX - which stands for Applied Circus: Radically Extreme - is a 10-week program for youth aged 9 to 19 that teaches circus skills such as juggling, acrobatics, group pyramids, trapeze, tumbling, parkour, trampoline and others.

The program was originally developed by Gymnastics BC with the goal of providing youth with the opportunity to participate, learn life skills, enjoy a healthy activity, make new friends and have fun. ACCESS has partnered with the Therapeutic Movement Society to offer the program as a physical and creative outlet for at-risk youth in the community, with ACCESS providing the support of a youth worker to assist with any financial, emotional and social barriers.

"We are proud to partner with Westminster Savings on the innovative ACRiX program," says Jerome Bouvier, Executive Director, ACCESS Youth Outreach Services Society. "This funding enables ACCESS to continue to work with the Tri-City Movement Therapy Society and Club Aviva by providing youth worker support to an innovative program for at-risk youth. Programs such as this are vital, and wouldn't be possible without funders like Westminster Savings that share a vision and philosophy that no youth should be left behind."

"We recognize the importance of personal development, freedom of expression and the social inclusion that comes from participating in the arts and active living," says Gavin Toy, President and CEO, Westminster Savings. "Gymnastics and circus arts can enrich lives and foster creative expression for a group of youth that may feel isolated from more traditional programs. We believe that opportunities like ACRiX are pivotal to healthy, inclusive communities."

Westminster Savings is supporting ACRiX as part of Project Better Balance, its community investment program that aims to help individuals and families achieve better balance in their lives by providing greater access for participation in the arts and active living.
