Westminster Savings Credit Union to Provide $20,000 in Scholarships to High School Students
New Westminster, B.C., Monday, March 2, 2009 — Ten graduating high school students in the TriCities, Ridge Meadows, Burnaby, New Westminster, Surrey/White Rock, and Langley areaswill receive $2,000 scholarships from Westminster Savings Credit Union in recognition of their community leadership and high academic achievements as part of the credit union’s Youth in Action Awards program.
This is the eighth year, Westminster Savings Credit Union has sponsored the Youth in Action awards, which recognizes young people based on their involvement in extra-curricular volunteer activities (including a demonstrated commitment during the student’s senior year), and a high level of academic achievement. The awards program reflects Westminster Savings’ ongoing commitment to education and honours young people who go the extra distance towards making the world a better place to live in.
“Young people are our future. By demonstrating their leadership and commitment to the communities in which they live, young people can inspire others to make meaningful contributions that help change lives,” says Maury Kask, Vice President of Marketing for Westminster Savings Credit Union. “Westminster Savings believes in recognizing these positive role models and our Youth in Action Awards are designed to honour extraordinary students who go out of their way to improve the lives of those around them.”
Last year’s winners included Chaitanya Lila Spencer, who was a grade 12 International Baccalaureate student at RE Mountain Secondary School in Langley. Chaitanya was also the grade 12 representative of her school’s “No Drama Queen’s” club, promoting anti-bullying and raising awareness and money for breast cancer research. In addition, she was a peer mediator, assisting fellow students involved in conflict and encouraging both parties to start a dialogue to resolve their differences. Part of her community contribution included spearheading a program to help local homeless people, organizing a group of 40 people who spent Christmas in a shelter with bags filled with prescription eyeglasses, hygiene products and food items. This was followed by a Valentine’s meal service at the shelter.
“As the generation of the future, we have a responsibility to make contributions to help make the world a better place,” said Chaitanya. “By helping others, we begin to understand our place, role and responsibilities as young citizens.”
The deadline for Youth in Action Award submissions is April 6, 2009, and the winners will be announced at their respective graduating ceremonies. Youth in Action Awards brochures and application forms are available at all branches of Westminster Savings Credit Union, at local high schools and online at www.wscu.com.
