Why do you need my personal information?

We hold personal information about you to help us meet your current and future financial service needs. The better we know you, the more able we are to provide the best products and services to meet your financial needs. We may use your personal information to determine your eligibility for products, ensure high service standards, meet regulatory requirements or verify your identity.

How do you obtain my personal information?

We obtain personal information from you directly, and from the product and service arrangements you have made with or through us. We also obtain information from credit reporting agencies, other financial institutions, and from the references you have authorized us to contact. Your consent can be either expressed or implied, and be given verbally, in writing, or electronically, depending on the sensitivity of the information. You can also give it directly to us or through an authorized representative, such as a lawyer, agent or broker.

How do you protect my personal information?

Safekeeping your personal information is very important to us. We have procedures in place to prevent unauthorized access, use or manipulation of your personal information. For example, all employees sign a confidentiality agreement and our computer systems have electronic measures such as passwords, encryption and personal identification numbers. Additionally, we limit physical access to confidential areas in our buildings. We also have contractual agreements with our business partners to ensure they maintain confidentiality when they provide you with a product or service.

Do you share my personal information with other organizations?

We share information in limited circumstances. For example, we share your personal information with the credit bureau and other financial institutions to maintain the integrity of the credit reporting system. We occasionally share information with legal or regulatory authorities when required by law. Also, we share personal information with our business partners, such as cheque printers, so they can provide you with products and services you've requested. Subject to applicable law, or unless you advise us otherwise, we may share a portion of your personal information within Westminster Savings to introduce products and services that may be of interest to you.

Under no circumstances do we ever sell your information to third parties.

How long do you keep my information on file?

We will retain your personal information only as long as it is needed to provide you with service and to meet legal requirements, after which the information is destroyed.

Do you need my Social Insurance Number (SIN)?

We are required by law to obtain your SIN to report any interest on income-earning accounts. Also, when we request your credit report, either to make credit decisions or update your information, using your SIN is the best way to ensure the information we have received actually refers to you, and not to someone else.

Do I have any choices in how you use my personal information?

Yes. While we want to keep you informed about Westminster Savings, you can choose to opt-out of receiving direct marketing from us (via mail, e-mail or telephone) for products unrelated to those you already have. To choose these options, please ask for our opt-out form at a Westminster Savings branch.

What will happen if I opt-out?

If you choose this option, you will no longer receive information such as special promotional offers, financial advice, product or service information, newsletters, or information on Westminster Savings community involvement. We will only send you what we are required to send you, such as account statements,* election bulletins, etc. Your opt-out request may affect your eligibility for products or services.

*You will continue to receive statement inserts.

What are my responsibilities regarding my privacy?

As a member, you are given access to certain payment systems in order to easily conduct transactions. This access includes Personal Identification Numbers (PIN) for ATMs, Personal Access Codes (PAC) for electronic banking through TelExpress or PCExpress. These numbers are not visible to Westminster Savings - it is up to you to protect this information and prevent misuse. We always advise members to safeguard the personal or banking information they choose to hold, whether it's account or VISA statements, unused cheques, or PIN/PAC number.

Remember that e-mail sent over the Internet is usually not transmitted in an encrypted format. We suggest you do not send confidential information to us or anyone else by unencrypted e-mail.

Can I see my personal information?

Yes. As indicated in our Privacy Code, we will show you the personal information we hold about you. In certain situations though, it may be inappropriate to provide you with information that contains references to other persons or cannot be disclosed for legal, security, or commercial proprietary reasons. If you would like to update or access your information, please visit a Westminster Savings branch nearest to you.
